Barbara Müller studied sinology and economics at the University of Hamburg and the Chinese People's University in Beijing. During her studies, she worked as a freelancer for a German daily newspaper and subsequently at the Institute of Asian Studies of today's German Institute of Global and Area Studies in Hamburg. Later, Barbara Müller headed the China office of the Cologne Chamber of Industry and Commerce and the German-Chinese Association. In 2002, she joined the BMW Foundation to advance the expansion of the Foundation's Asia programs. Since September 2011, she began to build up and develop a new communications department within the BMW Foundation. 

As a board member of the German branch, she supports Magic Bus, a NGO that empowers youth and communities in India in the areas of education, health, gender and livelihood using sports for development.
