2nd Transatlantic Economic Dialogue

March 26-27, 2009, Berlin
“International Financial Governance – Shaping the Future of the Global Economy?”

In 2009, the expert conference again offered some thirty American and European representatives of academia, politics and business a platform for an open exchange of opinions. Entitled "International Financial Governance - Shaping the Future of the Global Economy?," the conference aimed at gaining a better understanding of the current global and regional economic and political issues.

The discussion focused on the similarities and differences between today's and previous crises and examined the different crisis management in the United States and in European countries. A particular focus was on the return of nation-state approaches in Europe: Could a joint course of action of the European countries be more effective and improve Europe's position in the global economy in the long term?

Finally, the participants discussed the outlook for international financial governance. At first glance it seems as if the crisis has furthered international cooperation and strengthened the institutions of financial governance. However, achieving an accord on the future of international financial governance may turn out to be even more difficult than in trade, where the member countries of the WTO have not yet been able to conclude the current trade round. Both the emergence of new important powers and the limited willingness of the transatlantic powers to promote structural changes in international governance may impede this process.
