Panel Discussion on Social Policy 2011/1
May 12, 2011, Munich
"What Is Growth?"
Growth has traditionally been measured by factors such as labor, capital, and technology. There is currently wide debate about whether further material growth is possible both from an economic and ecological perspective in spite of the increasing productivity and efficiency of the economic system. Besides environmental pollution and the dwindling of natural resources, the massive public debt in Western industrialized countries is seen to be the main culprit behind the alleged end to constant growth. But what exactly do we mean by growth? An increase in quantity? Or rather an increase in the quality of the goods and services that are to heighten our well-being? How do we want to measure growth in the future? Could improving sustainable technologies, remaking social structures and thus innovation rather than increase be the key?
What does this mean for the idea of growth in our society? How do we measure a society’s growth? Can the social security systems only be maintained through solid economic growth? How can we succeed in remaking an aging society through qualitative immigration and successful, sustainable integration? How do we want to define growth in the future and what kind of growth is sustainable? Co-organized by the BMW Stiftung Herbert Quandt and BMW Welt, The event is on invitation only.
