1st European Young Leaders Forum
October 30 - November 2, 2008, Berlin
Towards Responsible Leadership in the Globalized Worlds of Work
The aim of the 1st European Young Leaders Forum was to provide participants with the opportunity to deal with several aspects of the globalized worlds of work and to reflect on and discuss the importance of responsible leadership in these worlds of work in many different ways. To this end, the forum focused on topics such as migration, integration, mobility, brain circulation and diversity management but also on new forms of work such as creative work, digital bohemia and new forms of work organization.
As a first, the participants of the European Young Leaders Forum explored different kinds of "globalized worlds of work" during "creative field trips". The trips included visits to internationally operating companies, a technology park, a global architectural firm, a socially deprived area with a high percentage of migrants, and a new kind of community office. Beyond merely visiting these facilities, the focus here was also on discussions of responsible leadership in a globalized world of work.
On n Saturday morning, this interactive and mobile part of the program was followed by two panel discussions on the role of politics and business in the globalized worlds of work. These were followed by an Open Space Session on the topic of "How do we use and link our skills and competencies as responsible leaders?," which was continued on Sunday morning with concrete options for action. The Open Space Session was suspended on Saturday evening because of the award ceremony of the first Ideas Competition of the BMW Foundation. Addressed to the BMW Foundation's alumni worldwide, this competition was designed to look for innovative project ideas that are oriented to the common good. The alumni of the BMW Foundation were given the opportunity to submit project proposals that activate responsible leadership in a globalized world while at the same time meeting criteria such as sustainability and orientation towards the common good; moreover, the projects are to serve as role models for others and are to be initiated or implemented by the applicants themselves. To help in the implementation of the winning projects, the BMW Foundation has established a fund and will draw on its alumni network.
